How to get from Valbona to Theth

Valbona and Theth are only a few kilometres apart on the map, but there is no road between them. The classic way is the hike over the Valbona Pass, one of the best-known day stages of the Peaks of the Balkans and the Albanian Alps. By road the trip goes all the way around through Shkodër and takes most of a day.

1. Hike over the Valbona Pass

• Distance and time: about 14–17 km and 6–8 hours, depending on where you start and your pace.
• Height: the pass is at roughly 1,800 m; expect around 800–1,100 m of climbing.
• Season: June to September. Snow can stay on the pass into June, and May and October are less reliable.
• Tip: start early and aim to cross the pass by early afternoon; summer storms often build up later in the day. Bring water, a rain layer and cash for the cafés along the trail.

2. Send your luggage

Hike with a day pack and let the heavy bags travel separately. Many guesthouses can arrange a horse to carry bags over the pass. 3. Travel by road with the Koman ferry

If you are not hiking, the scenic road option combines the Koman Lake ferry with a car transfer. The ferry crosses between Fierza (near Valbona) and Koman in about 2.5 hours, usually from mid-April to early November, with a morning departure from Koman and an early-afternoon departure from Fierza. Please check the current timetable with the ferry operator before you travel. Transferio can meet you at the Koman pier and drive you to Shkodër, or on to Theth.

Can I take a taxi or transfer from Valbona to Theth?
Not directly. There is no road over the Valbona Pass, so Valbona and Theth are linked by a hiking trail. By road you have to go around through Shkodër, usually with the Koman ferry, which takes most of a day.
